Case Study Structure

A proven template for documenting your design work. Use this structure to tell a compelling story about your process and impact.

1. Overview & Context

Set the stage. Briefly explain what the project is, why it exists, and your specific role. Keep it punchy.

Include:
  • Project Name & One-liner: "Redesigning the checkout flow for [App Name]."
  • Role: "Lead Product Designer"
  • Timeline: "3 months (Jan - Mar 2024)"
  • Team: "Worked with 1 PM and 2 Engineers."

2. The Problem

What were you trying to solve? Use data to back this up if possible. Frame it as a challenge.

Include:
  • Problem Statement: "Users were dropping off at the payment step because..."
  • Evidence: "Analytics showed a 60% drop-off rate."
  • Business Goal: "Increase conversion by 10%."

3. Discovery & Research

How did you understand the user? Show your work here—don't just tell.

Include:
  • Methodology: User interviews, surveys, competitive analysis.
  • Key Insights: "We discovered that users didn't trust the payment provider."
  • Artifacts: Personas, empathy maps, or quotes.

4. Ideation & Design

Show the evolution of your solution. This is where you show your craft and decision-making skills.

Include:
  • Sketches/Wireframes: Show the messy early work.
  • Iterations: "We tried Option A, but it failed because..."
  • Final UI: High-fidelity mockups or prototypes.

5. The Outcome

Did it work? Tie everything back to the original problem and business goals.

Include:
  • Results: "Conversion increased by 15%."
  • Learnings: "I learned the importance of early testing."
  • Next Steps: "If we had more time, we would..."
