Design Critique Guide

A structured session to gather feedback on design work, focusing on improvement rather than judgment.

Roles

Presenter

Sets the context, explains the problem, and guides the group through the design. Be open to feedback, not defensive.

Critiquers

Ask questions to understand intent. Provide feedback based on goals and principles, not personal preference.

Facilitator

Keeps the meeting on time, ensures everyone is heard, and prevents the discussion from going off-track.

How to Give Feedback

  • Be Specific: Avoid "I don't like it." Instead, say "I'm concerned that the contrast is too low for readability."
  • Tie to Goals: "Does this layout support the user's goal of quick checkout?"
  • Ask Questions: "What was your rationale for placing the button here?"
  • Focus on the Work: Critique the design, not the designer.

The Process

  1. Set Context (5m): Presenter explains the goals, constraints, and what kind of feedback they need.
  2. Walkthrough (10m): Presenter shows the design flow. Critiquers listen and take notes.
  3. Clarifying Questions (5m): Critiquers ask questions to understand the design better.
  4. Feedback & Discussion (20m): The group discusses strengths and weaknesses.
  5. Wrap-up (5m): Presenter summarizes key takeaways and next steps.
