Narrative & Storytelling Guide

Using storytelling to build empathy, communicate research findings, and frame design solutions.

Why Tell Stories in UX?

Stories are the most powerful form of human communication. In UX, they transform abstract data and user needs into memorable, relatable narratives that align teams and inspire action.

  • Builds Empathy: Stories help us walk in the user's shoes.
  • Makes Data Memorable: A narrative is easier to remember than a statistic.
  • Aligns Stakeholders: A shared story creates a shared understanding and vision.

A Simple Story Framework

Situation

Set the scene. Who is the user (persona)? What is their context?

Complication

Introduce the problem. What is the user's goal, and what obstacle is in their way?

Resolution

Show the outcome. How does our solution help the user overcome the obstacle and achieve their goal?
