Pair Design Guide

A collaborative technique where two designers work together on the same design task at the same time.

The Roles

The Driver

The person with the "mouse and keyboard." Their focus is on executing the design ideas being discussed.

The Navigator

The person observing, asking questions, suggesting directions, and thinking about the bigger picture.

How to Run a Session

  1. Define a Goal

Start with a clear, small, and achievable goal for the session. (e.g., "Design the login screen," not "Design the whole app.")

  2. Set a Timer

Work in focused bursts. A 25-minute Pomodoro session is a great start.

  3. Start Designing

One person acts as the Driver, the other as the Navigator. The Navigator should be thinking out loud.

  4. Switch Roles

Swap roles frequently (e.g., every 25 minutes) to keep energy high and perspectives fresh.

  5. Debrief

After the session, briefly discuss what you created, what worked well, and what you learned.
