Storyboarding Guide

A visual storytelling technique to explore how a user interacts with a product in a specific context.

Why Storyboard?

Storyboards help us visualize the user's environment, their triggers for using the product, and the ultimate outcome. Unlike wireframes, which focus on the interface, storyboards focus on the context and the narrative.

The Structure

1. The Trigger
Show the user in their environment experiencing a problem or need.
2. The Action
Show the user discovering or starting to use your solution.
3. The Interaction
Show the key steps of using the product to solve the problem.
4. The Outcome
Show the user's success and emotional state after using the product.

Tips for Great Storyboards

  • Don't worry about art skills: Stick figures are perfectly fine. Clarity is king.
  • Focus on emotion: Show how the user feels at each step (frustrated, relieved, happy).
  • Keep it short: Aim for 3-6 panels to tell a concise story.
